Doris McCarthy s’est fait connaître après la retraite de sa carrière d’enseignante en 1972. C’est seulement à la fin du vingtième siècle qu’elle expose fréquemment et éveille l’intérêt de la critique. Malheureusement, comme McCarthy l’observe elle-même, la peinture de paysage en tant que genre voit sa popularité décliner dans les années 1950. Les spécialistes en histoire de l’art et les grandes institutions d’art canadiennes accordent donc peu d’attention à son travail. Ses peintures demeurent toutefois très populaires auprès des collectionneurs et des collectionneuses, et beaucoup considèrent son autobiographie en trois volumes comme l’une des plus remarquables du genre au pays.
