Pour une petite ville, Halifax compte un nombre surprenant de musées et de galeries d’art. Pour en savoir plus sur le travail des artistes de Halifax, vous pouvez visiter le Musée des beaux-arts de la Nouvelle-Écosse (le MBANE ou la AGNS), la Anna Leonowens Gallery, la Dalhousie Art Gallery, la Galerie d’art de l’Université St. Mary’s et la MSVU Art Gallery. Les Archives provinciales de la Nouvelle-Écosse disposent d’un espace d’exposition bien occupé par les artistes locaux, et on trouve d’autres espaces communautaires tels la Craig Gallery au centre Alderney Landing, le Musée canadien de l’immigration du Quai 21 et la Mary E. Black Gallery. Quatre centres d’artistes autogérés sont en activité dans la ville – la Eyelevel, le Khyber Centre for the Arts, le Centre for Art Tapes et la Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative – ainsi qu’un centre hybride, le Blue Building. On y trouve aussi de nombreuses galeries commerciales, dont la Zwicker’s Gallery, Katzman Art Projects (anciennement Studio 21 Fine Art), Argyle Fine Art et la Teichert Gallery. Tant le MBANE que les Archives provinciales de la Nouvelle-Écosse et les quatre universités conservent des archives d’importance pour la recherche historique.
