This immersive abstract painting was inspired by the serene waters of Lac Clair, near Chicoutimi, Quebec, where Snow spent many joyful childhood moments at his mother’s family cottage. Lac Clair illustrates Snow’s investigation into the materiality of artmaking. Layered brushstrokes of blues and greens throughout the composition evoke the appearance of a deep body of water. Four pieces of adhesive tape emphasize the borders of the canvas, guiding the viewer’s eye from one side of the canvas to the next and generating a sense of movement. As a practical material with a linear form, the segments of adhesive tape stand in striking contrast to the richly textured field they partially frame.
